Supporting Refugee Students Community of Practice

One-size-fits-all approaches fail to adequately support refugee, asylum-seeking, and migrant students, particularly in areas like language and literacy development, help-seeking behaviours, information literacy, and fostering a sense of belonging.

This Community of Practice brings together colleagues from schools, universities, TAFEs, settlement organisations, and refugee/asylum-seeker organisations to share knowledge, strategies, and good practices for creating more responsive and inclusive educational environments.

Our Aims

  • Share effective strategies for supporting diverse student needs in language and literacy development
  • Develop approaches that encourage help-seeking behaviours among students from refugee and migrant backgrounds
  • Build information literacy skills tailored to students’ unique experiences and contexts
  • Create welcoming and inclusive educational environments
  • Move beyond generic approaches to implement targeted, culturally responsive support
