Read our new report on the state of refugee education in Australia
Refugee Education Australia is passionately committed to making education in Australia as accessible as possible for people who have experienced forced migration.
We are pleased to have partnered with the Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network on this groundbreaking report that shines a light on the challenges and opportunities for refugee education in Australia.
This report takes the temperature of how and where refugees fit into all levels of education, from early childhood to university study.
We find patterns of disadvantage that result from non-recognition in educational policy, poor understandings of forced migration and language development, and minimal data gathering to assess participation and performance.
This means that refugee students often fall through gaps in the education systems.
Our recommendations include:
- The development of a unified national refugee education framework.
- Recognition of refugees as an identified equity cohort across all levels of education.
- The mandated collection of data on refugee students across all levels of education.
- More professional development for people who work with refugees to increase knowledge and uptake of refugee-informed, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive approaches to supporting education and resettlement for new arrivals in Australia.
